Hybrid electric cars run on electricity or a combination of gasoline and electricity. The Earth-friendly vehicles are growing in popularity, due to the increased cost of gas and concern for the environment.
Benefits
Gas-powered vehicles burn fossil fuels, which release carbon dioxide and other harmful substances into the atmosphere. Hybrid electric cars use less gas, or no gas at all, so they are better for the environment.
Identification
Some hybrid electric cars can be driven for up to 40 miles without using any gas. The vehicles have power cords, which drivers can plug into standard electrical sockets to recharge the car.
Function
Hybrid electric cars have smaller engines and special motors that help the engines produce acceleration. The parts work together to convert gas into energy. Braking helps convert the energy into electricity.
Types
Honda introduced one of the first hybrid electric cars in the United States in 1999. Today, nearly all major auto companies have hybrid electric models, including Chevrolet, Ford, Nissan and Toyota.
Fun Fact
Famous people who have owned hybrid electric cars include Hillary Clinton, Danny DeVito, Cameron Diaz and President Barack Obama.
