Infrared heat is heat energy transferred by invisible waves, similar to the heat given off by the Sun. Infrared home heaters re-create this effect on a smaller, more portable scale. Infrared heaters are most effective when used for a duration of several hours or less, and when line of sight with the heater can be maintained. Heat output varies from 10,000 Btu to 40,000 Btu.

    On the Other: Potential Hazards

Obviously, the use of a heater carries with it the risk of fire. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports portable heaters are responsible for more than 25,000 residential fires per year, as well as 300 deaths and 6,000 instances of burns requiring emergency room care. Flammable materials should be kept away from the heater, and the heater should not be left unattended during use.

    Bottom Line

Infrared heaters are safe when used properly in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and common sense. Best results are achieved when the heater is used to heat, or supplement heating, of occupants in one room.
