<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Efficient Heating for Limited Spaces
Infrared home heaters emit a type of heat that directly warms items within the line of sight of the heater. Infrared heat can be effectively used to heat a single area or portion of a room. One study determined that infrared heaters can use an average of 35 percent less energy than a conventional furnace or baseboard system. In additon, an infrared heater that relies on electricity may cost less to operate than a heater, which uses a more expensive heating medium, such as heating oil.
On the Other: Infrared Heat Limitations
Infrared heaters can be slower to reach optimal operating temperature than other types of heaters. In addition, infrared heaters work best when line of sight is maintained with the heater. An infrared heater will not efficiently heat an entire room.
Bottom Line
When used to provide heat directly to the occupants of a room for no more than several hours, infrared heaters are an energy-efficient alternative to simply turning up the room's thermostat.
