  • Opening a file named "Wininit.exe" launches a moderately dangerous Trojan called Bymer. Wininit.exe is a form of malware and should be removed from your computer if found.

    History

The Bymer Trojan--a worm arriving in the form of Wininit.exe--was first discovered in October 2000. In 2007, Symantec downgraded it from a Category 3 to a Category 2 threat because of few recent reports of new cases.

    Who's Effected?

Anyone running a Windows operating system--including Windows 2000, 95, 98, ME, NT, XP or Vista--can get the Bymer worm from Wininit.exe.

    Variations

Msinit.exe does essentially the same thing as Wininit.exe, serving as a slightly different means of delivering Bymer.

    Prevention

According to Symantec, using a commercially available firewall and enforcing a password policy are two top ways to keep your computer safe from threats like the Bymer worm.

    Removal

Whether you've already opened Wininit.exe and launched Bymer or not, it's best to follow professional virus-removal instructions. Symantec.com offers a clear step-by-step tutorial. (See "Resources.")
