You can use a whole-house fan instead of air conditioners to cool your home. Many areas of the United States stay cool enough in the summer for a whole-house fan to easily provide a comfortable temperature. This will save energy and money.

On the Other: They Are Not Ideal for Everyone

A whole-house fan will not cool your home well enough if your area gets very hot and/or humid in the summer. If you run a whole house fan when the outside temperature is hotter than your home's inside temperature, you will waste energy and money. It can also bring pollen into your home, which can increase allergy sufferers' discomfort.

    Bottom Line

If you live in an area with milder summers that don't get very humid--and no one in your home has allergies or respiratory problems--a whole-house fan might be worth it for you. Otherwise, a central air-conditioning unit or several window units spread throughout your home might be a better option.
