  • Heartburn is caused by stomach acid that irritates the esophagus. Occasional heartburn is normal, but chronic heartburn can lead to other problems like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

    Lower Esophageal Sphincter

The lower esophageal sphincter (LES), helps keep the stomach acid in the stomach. If the LES does not close tight or opens too much, the acid can slip back into the esophagus and cause the burning sensation that we know as heartburn.

    Fried Foods

Fried foods contain fat and oils that are more difficult to digest. This causes them to be held in the stomach longer. The excess stomach content causes the lower esophageal sphincter to relax and open, allowing the acid into the esophagus.

    Foods That Cause Heartburn

Certain foods contain more acid and will frequently cause heartburn. These foods can include garlic, onions, chocolate, tomatoes, citrus fruits, fried foods, alcohol, peppermint and caffeinated beverages.

    Risk Factors

Too much pressure on the stomach can cause heartburn. Obesity, pregnancy, smoking or tight clothes can contribute to the frequency of heartburn.

    Prevention

Cutting down on the intake of fried foods will cut down on the frequency of heartburn. Consuming smaller meals and avoiding foods that are high in acid will also help eliminate heartburn occurrences.
