  • Darvocet, also known as propo-n/apap, is a prescription drug used to treat mild to moderate pain that occurs with or without a fever.

    Identification

Darvocet is the combination of acetaminophen and propoxyphene. Propoxyphene is a strong narcotic pain reliever while acetaminophen helps to reduce fever and amplify the effects of the propoxyphene.

    Dosage

The normal dosage for Darvocet is usually one pill every four hours, but no more than six pills in a 24 hour period.

    Warning

Darvocet can be habit-forming, so it is important to only take the drug as recommended by your physician.

    Considerations

If you drink alcohol on a daily basis or have had cirrhosis, the acetaminophen in Darvocet can be harmful.

    Toxic?

In July 2009, the FDA warned consumers that people who take Darvocet suffer higher overdose rates than those on other medication and that the drug may be toxic to the heart if taken in high doses.
