<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Yes, No One Can Get Through
Iron gates are protection for your home. Nobody can get through them, according to Dennis Bachman, owner of Bachman Iron Works from an article in "The Reading Eagle." In addition, Reading police Chief William M. Heim said iron bars can deter burglars.
On the Other: They Can Violate Building Codes
Iron gates across the front or back doors could prevent residents from a quick escape in case of fire, and they could hinder the firefighter's ability to get in as well. They may also violate city codes for aesthetic reasons.
Bottom Line
Iron gates will protect you. However, if they violate your building code, you can stay safe by having solid doors and windows with good locks and by trimming all shrubs near your windows to less than 2 feet, according to Heim.
