Bi-fold doors solve two problems; they provide a door over an opening without a frame and allow a door to open with half the room required by a regular door. The top or bottom of the door panels are mounted to a track, with the other end mounted to a pivot. As you pull the door open, it folds in half.
On the Other: Quality Issues
Manufacturers of cheap bi-fold doors give them a bad name. Shoddy construction and inferior materials result in a door that lasts a short time before it breaks. The old adage is true, you get what you pay for. Good quality bi-fold doors will last for years and cause few problems.
Bottom Line
Use bi-fold doors in places where they don't get a lot of daily traffic. Closets, pantries and storage spaces are good applications. Select doors not by how little they cost, but on the quality of construction and materials used. Follow installation instructions carefully. Bi-fold doors are good products and a good choice for some applications.
