  • When families divide their time between residences or are waiting for important news, the use of call forwarding, a feature offered by many telephone service providers, is an attractive feature. It is simple to begin forwarding a call, but many users are befuddled when they forget that the phone has been forwarded or do not know how to reverse the process. When attempting to disable the feature on land lines or cellular phones, it is important to remember how forwarding has been achieved, as well as how to disable it,to prevent phones from inadvertently being forwarded in the future.

    Reasons to Call Forward

Call forwarding provides several benefits, even though alternative ways of reaching someone who is away from the phone, such as cellular phones and voice mail with remote retrieval, have proliferated. When an individual travels away from home, forwarding calls to a cell phone gives callers the impression that someone is home, reducing the invitation for theft. When there is a technical problem with a phone line, calls can be received on another line. In addition, staff at some institutions, such as hospitals, might not dial all contact numbers listed for conveying important news and sensitive information. Forwarding a line ensures that such calls will not be missed.

    How to Forward a Call

In the case of most telephone service providers, to begin call forwarding, pick up the receiver and dial *72. Without hanging up, dial the area code and the number where you want your calls to be forwarded. On a rotary phone, dial the sequence at once. On a touch-tone phone, press "send" after dialing the code and sequence. A recorded message will play, informing you that the line has successfully been forwarded. Some service providers indicate this with a tone instead.

    Forwarding Remotely

Emergencies may necessitate the need for call forwarding when the forwarding phone is not available. If this is the case, call the customer service number of your service provider. Contact the service provider for the phone number you wish to forward, rather than the receiving number.

    Discontinue Call Forwarding

To discontinue call forwarding, dial *73 from the line that has been forwarded. A confirmation tone will sound when call forwarding has been successfully disabled.

    Troubleshooting

To confirm that call forwarding has been canceled, attempt to call the line. Note that when a call is forwarded, a landline phone may still ring. It will be one short ring. The call cannot be answered on the original line but is merely a reminder. If after the correct code has been dialed, the phone line remains forwarded, contact the customer service number of the telephone provider for assistance.
