When an engine is running at a stoichometric level it means that the vehicle is achieving maximum fuel efficiency and horsepower generation by mixing the proper amount of fuel with the proper amount of oxygen. An SLR chip allows the engine to keep adjusting itself so that it can always operate in this manner.
On the Other: Installation is Often Tricky
There's a price for the performance an SLR chip gives to a vehicle. The chips themselves are costly, and most people don't know how to access their car's computer to install the chips. As such, they'll have to pay a professional mechanic to install the chip for them.
Bottom Line
The cost of buying and installing an SLR performance chip won't be outweighed by the benefits of having and using it unless you look at the long term. The chip will have to earn its keep over the lifetime of the vehicle, and not in the first few weeks after it's installed.
