  • Social security income is reported on lines 20a and 20b of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form 1040 or on lines 14a and 14b of Form 1040A. You report your total benefit and the taxable amount.

    Filing Requirement

When social security benefits are your only income, you generally owe no taxes and are not required to file a return. If you received other income, you should file a return even if you owe no taxes.

    Reporting Benefits

You should receive Form SSA-1099 or, in some cases, Form RRB-1099 if you have received social security benefits. The net amount of your benefit is shown in Box 5. If you receive more than one form, add the net amounts together to get a total.

    Repayments

If you repaid any social security benefits during the tax year, the amount is shown in Box 4. This amount was deducted from your overall benefit in calculating the net benefit.

    Calculating the Taxable Amount

The IRS provides a number of worksheets for calculating the amount of tax you owe, if any (see Resources, below). The worksheets take different factors into account, depending on your circumstances.

    Free Tax Services

The IRS Guide to Free Tax Services (Publication 910) lists reliable resources for getting tax help at no cost. (See Resources, below.)
