Megapixels relate to the amount of individual pixels used to create an image using a digital camera. An image is made up of hundreds to millions of pixels. A pixel represents one dot of color on an image. A megapixel is equivalent to a million pixels. A camera's megapixel rating is a rounded number of how many million megapixels an image capture can achieve. You can calculate megapixels by multiplying the amount of pixels on the image's height by the amount of megapixels on the image's width. For example 2,592 pixels multiplied by 3,872 pixels gives you 10,036,224 pixels, equivalent to a 10 megapixel rating. Today, cameras for the average consumer boast anywhere between 8 and 15 megapixels. High-end cameras can have upwards of 24-plus megapixels. More megapixels equal greater detail in an image and also allows for extensive cropping without losing too much detail.Pixels
