  • There are three types of HVAC certification, and you can study for the HVAC tests online or at a training center. HVAC technicians must be certified by the EPA (the United States Environmental Protection Agency), and you must be legally certified in order to buy refrigerants.

    Types of Certification

To service building air conditioners, you need Section 608 certification, which will allow you to purchase refrigerant in containers larger than 20 pounds. Section 609 certification allows you to service motor vehicle air conditioners and purchase refrigerant in any size container. R-41A, supplemental training, is the third certification program.

    HVAC Core Technician Program

Websites offer learning modules that suggest working with a local technician to try your new skills. After completing each module, you can take a check-off competency sheet to the technician you are working with and have him check off each skill set. This helps enforce what you are learning.

    Ways to Test

Section 608 Type I, II and III tests can be purchased through EPA distributors. After taking the test, you will get your results online. You can receive the test through the mail, or you can download online. You can practice the test as many times as you need, and you are allowed to complete an open-book test. The cost of the test includes your certification card upon successful completion. Alternatively, you can find local training centers. NATE Certified

If you want to become North American Technician Excellence certified, you need to take their tests. NATE requires a core and specialty test; you decide which test you want. The core test is specific to general knowledge, and the specialty exam is specific to installation, service maintenance and repair or HVAC/HVACR systems. A senior technician must hold two NATE service level certifications, and your certification is good for five years.
