<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Accentuate What Is There
Choose to paint a wall that hosts a fireplace, work of art or other point of interest. The eye will be drawn here naturally, and a different color will help accentuate and complement what's already there.
On the Other: Create a Focal Point
If the room doesn't have a natural focal point, create one by choosing a wall to paint an accent color. In an oblong room, the accent wall should be a short wall to help balance the space. In a regular-sized room, the accent wall should not compete visually with other walls---avoid painting an accent color next to a wall that contains, for example, multiple pictures or a mirror.
Bottom Line
Painting a wall an accent color adds immediate appeal to a room. The accent color can be used to highlight a wall that hosts interesting items that the room already contains, or the accent color can be painted on a wall to create interest that doesn't already exist.
