Baseball is a sport that is played by two opposing teams consisting of nine players each. The object is to get hits and score runs. The team with the most runs at the end of the game wins. Certain pieces of equipment are necessary to play baseball. During a baseball game, players need to use a ball to pitch and hit, bats for hitting and gloves for fielding the ball. Managers must keep extra balls on hand in case one gets lost. Extra bats are needed in case one cracks or breaks while a player is batting. Other than the gloves, baseball equipment is usually carried in large baseball bags. Three bases and a home plate are needed for playing the game of baseball. The distance between the bases varies from 60 feet in little league to 90 feet in major league baseball. A rubber block is used for the pitcher's mound. When baseball players come up to bat, they need to use batting helmets to protect their head. Cleats are usually worn on the field to provide better traction for running. Moreover, the catchers on both teams use chest and face protectors as well as knee pads or shields. This equipment protects the from foul balls or errant throws from the pitcher. Donuts are weights that a player puts on a bat to warm up before hitting. Rosin bags are frequently used by pitchers to maintain their grip on the baseball throughout the game. Baseball teams sometimes used mechanical baseball pitchers for batting practice. Young kids sometimes learn how to hit off of a baseball tee.
