<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Keeping Others Out
Security bars placed over windows in your home or business can protect your posessions and family from burglers. More than half of all home break-ins begin through a rear window, when someone takes advantage of the easy, ground-level access. Security bars make breaking through the window more difficult and most thieves won't put in the effort.
On the Other: Keeping You In
However, you have to be careful about the type of bars installed. Blocked windows are dangerous if there is a fire, so the U.S. Fire Administration recommends getting bars with a quick release. This enables someone on the inside to quickly and easily pop the bars out, if needed. Older security bars can be retrofitted with a quick release, rather than being replaced.
Bottom Line
If installed properly, security bars can be quite safe and can helpkeep your posessions and family safer as well. Install a quick release on every window and train everyone in the household or business to use it properly in case of an emergency. Include removal of the bars in your fire drills to ensure that there is no confusion.
