  • <h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Metal Roof Advantages

A metal roof lasts three to four times longer than a conventional asphalt-shingle roof. Metal roofs are energy-efficient and may qualify for one-time U.S. tax credits of up to $1,500. Metal roofing comes in a variety of colors and decorative metals such as copper and iron. Finally, metal roofs are extremely fire retardant and provide increased fire protection in wildfire areas.

On the Other: Metal Roof Drawbacks

Metal roofs are not suitable for do-it-yourself projects. They require expert installation and specialized tools to correctly fit roof lines and seams and to prevent leaks. The material cost of a metal roof is about three times the cost of a conventional asphalt shingle roof. Metal roofing is better suited to low-sloping roofs as opposed to steep ones, and is easier to install on simple roof shapes as opposed to complex designs such as those with numerous dormers.

    Bottom Line

Metal roofing is long lasting, fire retardant and energy efficient, but more expensive than asphalt shingles. If you have a low sloping, simple roof and live in a part of the country where wildfires are a frequent problem, a metal roof is definitely better. Otherwise, asphalt shingles are adequate and more affordable in the short run.
