Hormonal changes are one of the leading causes of hair loss in women. Oral contraceptives add hormones to your body causing the body's natural hormonal balance to temporarily get a bit out of sorts.
New Contraceptive User
When you first begin taking birth control pills, you body needs time to adapt to the hormones. During this process, you might notice hair loss and other side effects.
Adaptation
Luckily, our bodies are masters at adaption. After you have been taking birth control for awhile, you body will get used to the hormones and the hair loss should stop.
Time Frame
While it varies from woman to woman and by birth control type being taken, women should expect it to take roughly 2 to 4 months for the body to get used to the new hormones.
Considerations
It is normal for your body to shed hair daily. Losing roughly 100-125 hairs daily is considered normal, so don't be alarmed if this occurs.
Note
Sometimes when women stop taking birth control pills after long-time use, they notice significant hair loss as their body gets used to not having the extra hormones. This hair loss typically should cease in the same 2 to 4 month time frame.
Warning
After 2 to 4 months, if you are still noticing a significant amount of hair loss then talk to your doctor about switching contraceptives or to ensure the hair loss is not being caused by some other, deeper-rooted issue.
