Hair growth is a highly beneficial function of the body, especially on the scalp. It provides warmth, cushion and aesthetic value. Sudden hair loss can be alarming, but it is usually temporary.
Hair Growth
According to the Health Department at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, hair grows in cycles. Typically, 90 percent of hair is growing while the other 10 percent is in the telogen, or resting, phase.
Telogen Effluvium
Doctors at the University of Alabama at Birmingham state that telogen effluvium is a sudden loss of hair that can be caused by several different factors.
Emotional Distress
Telogen effluvium can be brought on by intense emotional stress. A divorce or the death of a loved one can cause this condition. Typically, hair loss begins about three to six months after a stressful event.
Physical Stress
Physical stress can also bring about telogen effluvium. Surgery or a major illnesses are examples of the kind of physical stress than can cause sudden hair loss.
Hormones
A hormonal imbalance can also cause sudden hair loss. Hormonal imbalance can be caused by an overactive or underactive thyroid.
