Patient care techs or aides work as part of the team of health care providers in hospitals, nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. Though the specific duties of patient care techs varies based upon state laws and employer preferences, similarities exist between what patient care techs do each day.
Function
Patient care techs perform routine tasks that require only basic medical training, to allow physicians and nurses to focus on other tasks.
Types of Duties
Patient care techs assist patients with self-care such as bathing, feeding, dressing, grooming and toileting. Techs also might check and record patients' vital signs, deliver meals, and assist patients with walking the corridors for exercise.
Time Frame
In hospitals and nursing homes that care for patients around the clock, patient care technicians might work evening, overnight, weekend and holiday shifts.
Requirements
In most states, patient care technicians attend diploma or certificate programs at medical training or technical schools before working in the field. Some employers require patient care techs to obtain a state license by passing a written examination.
Compensation
As of December 2009, patient care technicians averaged annual salaries of $31,000, according to Indeed.com.
