  • Convertible Mustangs are fun and invigorating to drive, but the convertible top must be properly cared for or else it will quickly deteriorate. Replacing a convertible top comes with a hefty price, which you will want to avoid. Whether your Mustang convertible is new or used, knowing how to clean and care for the soft convertible top is a must.

How to Care For Your Convertible Top

Soft convertible tops can either be made of canvas or vinyl. Each type must be cleaned and cared for differently. If you are unsure of the material yours is made of, take your vehicle to the local Ford dealership or to a local body shop and they should be able to tell you. Many types of common cleaning products can cause damage to both types of tops and should be avoided. These include ammonia, detergent, alcohol, vinegar and bleach. Harsh cleaners will deteriorate a canvas top, and they will dry out and cloud vinyl. Just because your convertible top looks clean, it doesn't mean that it is. Darker colors such as black tops make it even harder to detect dirt. You should wash your soft convertible top once monthly using a cleaner specified for your type of top. Make sure the car is parked in a shaded spot. Spray the top down with a hose. Spray a light coating of cleaner on the entire top. It is not recommended to use a cloth or sponge to clean the top. Instead use a sift bristle brush and gently wipe the top down entirely. If you come across a tough stain, which is bound to happen over time, you may require a stronger cleaner. Try Wolfstein's Raggtopp Cleaner. Give it a moment to soak but don't let it fry into the fabric, and don't, under any circumstances, try to scrub the stain out. Follow the directions of the cleaner. If you have a vinyl window, take care not to use the brush on it as it will scratch. Make sure to rinse the top thoroughly. It is acceptable to use a chamois to soak up the water, but be sure not to wipe. Simply blot up the water.

Cleaners to Use on a Convertible Top

There are several types of convertible top cleaners that are safe to use, including Raggtopp Fabric and Vinyl Cleaner and 303 Tonneau and Convertible Top Cleaner. Raggtopp also makes a protectant for convertible tops. Stop into a local auto parts store to find convertible top cleaner for your car.
