According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, air filters that are ozone generators can be harmful. They produce up to 10 times more ozone than what is acceptable, according to the Code of Federal Regulations.
On the Other: Different Kinds are not Harmful
HEPA filters are acceptable for cleaning the air in your home. Even though they produce ozone byproducts, they are within the acceptable level, according to the AAFA. You just need to ask for proof from the manufacturer that the product you are considering is within acceptable ozone levels.
Bottom Line
Air purifiers can remove some pollutants from the air in your home. Before buying one, find out its efficiency rating and if the air filter meets acceptable ozone levels.
