  • One box of traditional cake mix makes 4 to 6 cups of batter, so keep that fact in mind as you are baking. If you know the capacity of your pans, you'll be able to do conversions to figure out how much batter you need for each cake.

    Round Cake

Most round-cake pans have an 8-inch diameter, so one mix is enough to make a two-layer round cake. If the pan diameter is greater than 8 inches, you may need more than one box of mix.

    Sheet Cake

A traditional sheet cake is about 12 inches by 18 inches and 2 inches deep. You'll need between two and three boxes of cake mix to make this cake. Commercial sheet cakes are bigger and will require more mix.

    Square Cake

One box of mix should be enough to make batter for an 8-inch by 8-inch or 9-inch by 9-inch square cake. Square pans of that size normally require about 5 cups of batter.

    Odd Shapes

If your pan has an irregular or novelty shape, consult the instructions or the manufacturer to find out how much batter it requires. If that isn't an option, you can measure the capacity of the pan by filling it with cups of water to see how many cups of batter you need.

    Pie Pans

A pie pan with an 8- or 9-inch diameter will hold batter from one box of cake mix (between 4 and 5 cups).
