  • Laminate flooring is very resilient material and is resistant to scratches and messes, making it ideal for a family home. While candles are a lovely decoration, they aren't spill-proof. Spilled wax can seem like a pain to clean up as it works its way into the surface it dripped upon. Using low heat and some items you already may have around the house, wax cleanup becomes much easier than you might have imagined.

    Removing the Wax

In order to remove wax from laminate flooring, you need a plastic bag, ice and a plastic putty knife. Use a bag that zips closed to keep the ice from spilling. Chipped ice will spread over a larger area easier than full-sized ice cubes, but it also will melt faster. Consider the area you need to remove wax from. If it is very large, you need several bags and a lot more ice. None of the bags should have holes. Do not fill bags to the very top with ice so that the ice has room to spread in the bag. This also makes the bag easier to close. Once you have the bag filled with ice, all you need to do is place it on the area where the wax spilled. You need to leave it for only about five minutes. That is enough time to freeze the wax and make it easier to scrape off. You can place a towel between the wax and the bag if you are afraid the ice will damage the floor by direct contact. To scrape off the wax after it freezes, use a plastic putty knife. Using a metal knife may scratch or gouge your floor. It should take only a small amount of pressure to remove the wax. So don't dig into the floor. You also can use a plastic caulk wedge. It normally is used to smooth caulk into tile spaces but is firm enough to scrap off the wax. If you scratch your floor with this method, you can buy a repair stick from your flooring manufacturer. The repair stick will match your laminate flooring and be resistant to scratching and messes once applied. Order the stick from your manufacturer, and have the name of your style of laminate flooring handy when ordering to ensure that the stick is an exact match to your flooring. The same freezing method can be used to remove chewing gum from your laminate flooring.
