  • Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer which affects the abdominal lining. It's sometimes called abdominal mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma is a very aggressive tumor which is almost always fatal.

    Causes

According to the Mesothelioma Center, this type of cancer is caused by the ingestion or inhalation of asbestos.

    Symptoms

According to Mesolink, symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include abdominal pain, weakness, nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal swelling and bowel obstruction. The Mesothelioma Center reports that patients may also have fluid in the abdomen.

    Diagnosis

In their article titled "Peritoneal Mesothelioma: A Review," Dr. Alessio Bridda, Dr. Ilaria Padoan, Dr. Roberto Mencarelli and Dr. Mauro Frego say the best way to diagnose this type of cancer is through a CT scan. However, they also say a scan alone is not enough to fully diagnose it, so they also recommend lab tests on fluid from the tumor.

    Types of Peritoneal Mesothelioma

The Mesothelioma Center reports that there are three types of peritoneal mesothelioma. The dry-painful type is characterized by one large mass or several small masses all located in the same area. Patients who have wet peritoneal mesothelioma don't have any solid masses, although they do have fluid in the abdomen and several nodules. The mixed type of peritoneal mesothelioma involves a combination of the first two types.

    Treatment

According to Mesolink, treatments for peritoneal mesothelioma include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.
