Depressants are chemicals which slow down the central nervous system. Because of their calming effects, they have a high potential for addiction and abuse. Depressants include alcohol, marijuana, inhalants and prescription drugs.
The Facts
Depressants such as alcohol and marijuana may be taken for their relaxing effects or to reduce inhibitions. Taken in small amounts, depressants can result in calmness and relaxed muscles. These chemicals slow normal brain function and may be prescribed in small amounts for insomnia or irritability.
Types
Prescription depressants are also known as tranquilizers or sedatives. Barbiturates may be prescribed to treat tension or sleep disorders. Benzodiazepines are prescribed to treat anxiety and panic attacks.
Short-term Effects
Using depressants can lead to slowed pulse and breathing, lowered blood pressure and drowsiness. Users may experience slurred speech, fatigue and confusion.
Long-term Effects
Prolonged use of depressants can result in addiction, depression and sleep disturbances. Abuse of these substances can result in respiratory arrest and death.
Warning
The use of depressants should not be stopped abruptly. Withdrawal from depressants can last up to 10 days. Stopping abruptly can lead to convulsions, coma and death.
