  • The word psychology is derived from a Greek term meaning "science of the mind." In pursuing a psychology degree you will be devoting yourself to the study of the mind and human behavior.

    Requirements

In addition to general education requirements, you will need to complete a predetermined number of core psychology courses. Some examples include introduction to psychology, abnormal psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, psychology history and research methods.

    B.A. vs. B.S.

Bachelor of Arts degrees are more humanities-focused while Bachelor of Science degrees require more science and math courses. Both degrees are equally good, but B.S. degrees are recommended if you plan to attend graduate school.

    Time Frame

After you've completed your undergraduate degree, a master's degree or PhD may require up to eight years in graduate school, depending upon your specialization. However, graduate degrees offer better career opportunities and salaries than do associate or bachelor degrees.

    Specialization

If you choose to attend graduate school, you'll need to decide on an area of specialization. Clinical, counseling, developmental, educational, industrial, school and social psychology are just some of the options you will have.

    Career Opportunities

An undergraduate degree offers limited psychology-related career options, two of which are human resources and career counseling; nonetheless, an undergraduate psychology degree can be an asset in any workplace setting. A graduate degree guarantees a larger selection of lucrative career opportunities.
