Unless you're a cowboy towing a trailer across the Everglades, odds are you'll never need four wheel drive (4WD). African game wardens, American Forestry officers and professional tractor-pullers use two wheel drive, so the odds are pretty slim that most people will ever really need it. Four wheel drive is one of those things that you'll never miss until you've used it, and modern 4WD systems are less costly than ever. According to the EPA, 4WD Chevrolet Tahoes get up to 14 miles per gallon (mpg) during city driving and 20 mpg on the highway, which is exactly the same as 2WD models. The peace of mind of having 4WD may well be worth the average $1000 cost of the option. 4WD is like a pocket-knife or a gun: better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. However, according to Car and Driver, city dwellers would be better off spending the money on a set of decent all-terrain tires for the occasional off-road jaunt than on a 4WD-equipped vehicle. On One Hand: You'll Likely Never Need It
