  • Psoriasis is a skin condition that can occur on the body and scalp. It affects an estimated 2 percent of people worldwide. Although many treatment options exist, psoriasis is not curable.

    Symptoms

Psoriasis symptoms include redness, patches of scaly skin and flaky, dandruff-like plaques. Psoriasis eruptions may be limited to a small area or cover a large part of the body. Mild psoriasis is often manageable, but severe psoriasis can be embarrassing and affect your quality of life if it becomes difficult to conceal, like on your hands or face.

    Causes

White blood cells, known as T cells, are mistakenly triggered to attack healthy skin cells prompting the production of new cells to take their place. Skin cells are renewed within days instead of weeks--much faster than dead skin can shed. This causes skin cell build-up and the formation of scaly, inflamed patches.

    Risk Factors

Psoriasis risk factors include a family history of psoriasis, weak immune system, obesity and smoking. Psoriasis is sometimes triggered by stressful or traumatic experiences.

    Treatment

In mild cases, topical treatments such as vitamin A and synthetic vitamin D creams, salicylic acid and coal tar may be enough to effectively control psoriasis. Moderate to severe cases may require light therapy (sunlight, UVB phototherapy) and prescription drugs or injections.

    Alternative Remedies

Applying aloe vera extract topically and taking fish oil supplements may help reduce inflammation.
