If you have discussed buying auto insurance through an agent, your agent may have recommended that you purchase comprehensive coverage. Understanding this coverage will decide if it is right for you.
Definition
Comprehensive insurance is an auto insurance coverage that pays for damage to your car that is caused by an event other than a collision with another vehicle or a fixed object.
Theft and Vandalism
This coverage will pay for repairs to your car if it is vandalized. Also, if your car is stolen, it will pay to replace your vehicle.
Collision with an Animal
Although most one-car accidents are covered under collision coverage, damage resulting from collision with an animal is paid under comprehensive insurance.
Weather Damage
If your car is damaged by hail, flood or another weather-related event, comprehensive coverage will pay for your vehicle's repairs. This also includes damage from debris and falling tree branches.
Coverage Limit
Comprehensive coverage pays up to the "actual cash value" of your car---the amount your vehicle would have been worth if the damage or theft had not occurred.
Deductible
Your deductible (the amount you agree to pay out of pocket) is deducted from payments under comprehensive coverage.
