  • Building safety is the goal of the codes and standards developed by the International Code Council, or ICC. The ICC is a membership association that tests to certify inspectors of residential and commercial buildings.

    ICC Certification

The prestigious ICC certification program tests for knowledge in construction code and enforcement. It is the oldest and largest certification program in the United States. A professional who passes an ICC test holds "ICC Certification" in his or her specialty. ICC Certified professionals are listed on the ICC Web site, and can become members of the ICC.

    Professional Accomplishment

For many professionals, ICC Certification is integral for career advancement. Many jobs require ICC Certification, including residential and commercial inspectors, plans examiners, code enforcement, general examiners and fire inspectors. Municipal building departments and state agencies usually require ICC Certification for code officials.

    Becoming ICC Certified

Examinations for ICC Certification are open to anyone who pays the examination fee, which is generally less than $100. There is no requirement for education or experience to take an ICC Certification exam. Most of the tests are "open book" using the ICC code books.

    Renewing Certification

Professionals with ICC Certification must renew their credentials every three years. Every ICC Certification has a unique set of renewal requirements.

    Expert Insight

ICC Certification is an important qualification for many high-level code and inspection careers, but it is not the only measure of qualifying for a job. Many employers require state certifications, and other special certifications.
