  • Replacing an ink cartridge in an HP printer is simple, unless you are using a very HP large printer, such as one that prints newspapers or magazines. HP ink cartridges are located inside the printer and contain the ink that is used for printing.

    Removing an HP Ink Cartridge.

Turn your HP printer on and open it. When the printer is opened, the ink cartridges will slide to the middle from the right side, where they are covered, for easier removal. In Officejets, Deskjets, Photosmart copiers and HP photo printers, the ink cartridges are removed by pressing the tab on the vertical side of the cartridge, which is facing you, and gently pulling upward; the cartridge should pop right out. Take the cartridge and place it on some paper towels in case it is dirty.

    Installing an HP Ink Cartridge

Take the replacement cartridge and remove the plastic covering on the filling hole. Open your printer and align the replacement ink cartridge to the space made for the ink cartridge. Gently force the cartridge into the compartment until you hear a click. Close the printer and wait for the computer to recognize the cartridge and ask you to run "head cleaning." Cleaning is not necessary for a replacement ink cartridge unless the filling hole is dirty, but you might want to run head cleaning in any case. Your printer is now ready to print again.
