The engineering of laptops puts all of the working components underneath the keyboard, and sandwiches it between a surface and your hands. Any raise off of a working surface will increase the airflow under the unit and lower the temperature. Metal computer stands with mesh surfaces for airflow work better than plastic at cooling. For extreme temperatures, hot climates and heavy use that will increase unit temperatures, coolers with fans or even electric air conditioners are best.

On the Other: Reasons to Not Use a Laptop Cooler

Your need for cooling will depend a lot on your working situation. If you keep your laptop on your lap when you work, don't have it on for long periods of time, and don't work in warm areas such as next to a heater, or sunny window, you may not need one at all.

    Bottom Line

Laptop coolers work very well and are a great idea under the right circumstances. Not everyone needs one, but very hot environments or extremely heavy use of a laptop may require fans or cooling units in addition to airflow coolers.
