For many people with persistent back issues, memory foam toppers have proved to be an excellent means of getting a better night's sleep. Less expensive than buying a new mattress, a memory foam topper typically measures between 1 to 4 inches thick and can really make a mattress more comfortable.
On the Other: Some Buyers Are Disappointed
Although there are good foam toppers to be had for less than $100, some people just don't find them comfortable. Foam toppers do take some getting used to, as they yield to your form and can make it slightly more difficult to move about while sleeping. Another common complaint is that they don't do much to revive old, worn-out mattresses.
Bottom Line
Like any type of mattress or mattress pad, memory foam toppers should be given a thorough in-store test before being purchased. Since it's really a matter of preference, don't be shy about spending some time making your decision. If your mattress is really nearing the end of its life, don't expect a memory foam topper to make it feel like a new one.
