The chimpanzee is one of the great apes and those in the wild subsist on a varied diet. According to the San Diego Zoo Animal Bytes website, scientists have observed chimps eating as many as 80 different things.
Plants
Vegetable matter such as bark, nuts, seeds, leaves, flowers and fruit comprise much of the chimpanzee's diet. During the course of an average day, they will eat as many as 20 kinds of plants.
Insects
Chimpanzees will eat many kinds of insects, but termites and ants make up a large percentage of the bugs they consume. Females consume about twice as many termites as males.
Advanced
Chimpanzees are advanced enough to utilize tools and will employ a stick to reach ants and termites in their hills.
Meat
Chimpanzees will hunt, kill and eat other animals, such as monkeys and even antelopes. Hunting in groups improves their success rates.
Fun Fact
There have been reports of some chimps chewing on and/or eating plants known to have medicinal powers when the creature is sick or hurt.
