  • Travelers today have a number of options to cash when they embark on trips. Although credit and debit cards are easy to use and widely accepted, many travelers prefer to use traveler's checks instead. Offered by banks, financial institutions and membership organizations as a secure equivalent to cash, traveler's checks offer a safe, guaranteed and accepted method of payment no matter where you travel.

    Signature and Countersignature Blanks

The most visible characteristic of traveler's checks is the signature and countersignature blanks. When you first purchase traveler's checks, you sign one of the blanks. Once you arrive at your destination and need to use a check, countersign the check in front of the merchant. These two signature blanks allow merchants to verify your identity and match your signatures.

    Blank for Merchant Name

Like all checks, traveler's checks have a blank marked "Pay to the order of" to indicate the merchant name so the underwriting institution can direct funds to the merchant. Usually the blank for the merchant name is at the top of the check.

    Denomination

Traveler's checks usually have a blank, box or pre-printed artwork indicating denomination. Because traveler's checks are a cash equivalent, you purchase them in advance in denominations of $20, $50, $100 or $250. The signature and countersignature blanks provide a measure of security so if someone steals your checks, he or she cannot use them since the signature will not match.

    Date

All traveler's checks have a blank near the top where you can indicate the date of the transaction, just like personal or cashier's checks. Unlike personal checks, however, traveler's checks do not expire within 90 days of signature.

Logo and Coded Information of Financial Information

No matter the issuing institution, traveler's checks feature the pre-printed logo and authorizing signature of an institutional representative, as well as coded financial processing information at the bottom of the check. Like with personal checks, this coded financial information helps the merchant's bank receive funds from the issuing bank.
