  • When you lose your job, the first thing that can come to mind is paying the bills and keeping food on the table. Unemployment insurance is designed to make sure that people who have lost their jobs for no reason of their own are able to at least look forward to some sort of income while looking for a new job.

    In Person

It might be beneficial to spend some time at your local unemployment office if you are collecting benefits for the first time. Your state unemployment department will expect you to be looking for a job as you are collecting your benefits, and that process can sometimes be a bit confusing. A visit to the local department of labor office will allow you to speak to a representative to get your questions answered, set up your account so you can begin to get your benefits and also show you how to use the resources at the unemployment office to help you find your next job.

    Over the Phone

When you set up your account, you will be given the option to call a phone number and give your benefit information over the phone. To keep your checks coming on time, you will need to make the phone call before the weekly deadline. The department of labor office can let you know what day of the week you have to call by to meet your deadline. In most cases, giving your information over the phone means interacting with a computer that does not offer a lot in the way of assistance or access to information.

    Online

The Internet offers you the opportunity to register for your weekly unemployment check, and browse an online library to find information. Once you have established your account with a live representative, you can use the website to give your information for the week and continue your job hunt. You can email any questions you have to the unemployment representatives and make sure that your resume information is up to date.
