The number of megapixels a camera has is determined by multiplying the number of pixels wide the sensor is by the number of pixels tall the sensor is, then dividing the result by 1 million. For example, a sensor 1,500 pixels wide and 1,000 pixels tall would have a resolution of 1.5 megapixels.Source:
