Rain chains are an aesthetically pleasing alternative to a traditional gutterspout that have been used in Asian cultures for centuries.
Material
Rain chains can be made of many materials but are often made of copper, bronze or stainless steel. Copper rain chains develop an attractive green patina with wear.
Use
Rain chains can be hung at the eaves of the house or any point where the roof slopes downward, directing water runoff toward that area. Rain chains deliver rain to the ground or to a rain barrel.
Installation
Rain chains are usually sold in kits that contain the hardware needed to attach the rain chain to the gutter. After you remove an existing gutter spout, you have to insert a rod through your gutter and clip the rain chain hardware to one end of the rod.
Origin
Rain chains are most prominently used in Japan. Their Japanese name, "kusari doi," translates into rain chain.
Tip
Before you purchase a rain chain, measure the distance from your gutter to the ground or a rain barrel or decorative fountain that you'll place below the rain chain. Most styles of rain chain are sold by the foot or meter.
