  • Bamboo floors are made of bamboo that has been cut into strips, steamed and flattened. Sometimes the bamboo is also heated, which makes it weaker but gives it a darker color. When used on floors, bamboo is always coated with some sort of protective sheen, such as clear urethane or a similar material. Bamboo is a soft wood and will mark easily without this kind of protection. Fortunately, this coating also makes bamboo floors fairly simple to clean.

    Removing Dust

The main danger with bamboo floors is that the urethane coating may fade away over time with the abrasive action of dirt and dust. This means that regular cleaning will help the floor last longer, and simple cleaning habits like sweeping dirt away regularly will keep the coating protected. A vacuum cleaner with a soft end, such as a brush-based attachment used for hard surfaces, will do an even more thorough job of cleaning dust off the floor. For regular dustings, many people choose to use a dust-collecting dry mop like a Swiffer mop. Using a wet mop on hardwood floors is generally not advised, because the wood can absorb the moisture and warp, permanently damaging the floors. Bamboo, with its tight-fitting boards and coating, does not suffer as much from the effects of moisture, but if you use a mop be sure it is only slightly damp if wet at all. Some mops come with different types of wood soap which are meant to help reinvigorate the urethane coating and make it last longer.

    General Upkeep

When it comes to floor cleaners, they should always be diluted in water before use, since the acidic qualities of many floor cleaners can be just as damaging to the bamboo as dirt and dust. Some cleaners are made especially for bamboo floors and may have separate instructions of their own, which should be followed. Eventually, the urethane coating of the bamboo floor will need to be replaced. In a residential home this is only necessary every eight years or so. The floor's integrity can be preserved by taking simple actions to protect it. Putting a mat at the doors for people to wipe or take off their shoes will ensure the floor doesn't suffer from any scratches that can easily damage bamboo floors. Any furniture should be used with protective felt pads so it will not dent or scratch the surface.
