  • One myth about balding is that wearing a hat will cause hair loss. Although many men wear hats to cover hair loss, hats are not a culprit. The hormone dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, is responsible for the majority of hair loss.

    Hats are Protective

Unless you wear your hat so tight it cuts off circulation, you're not going to lose your hair from wearing one. In fact, hats provide protection from sunburn, so they make a positive contribution in this regard. Also, people don hats when they're waiting for their hair to grow back. If hats cause hair loss, why would they wear hats while waiting?

Why the Myth May Have Developed

Men often cover bald spots with a hat. As a result, some people might conclude that wearing a hat can lead to hair loss. While it's true that wearing a hat for too long of time can cause a buildup of sebum, an oily secretion that is a precursor to hair loss, that won't happen if you shampoo your hair regularly. Wearing a hat is not a reason for balding.

    Traction Alopecia

Probably the only head covering in and of itself that could contribute to some hair loss would be the continual wearing of a swim cap. When the hair is pulled too tightly, a type of hair loss condition called traction alopecia results. The condition can be remedied if the reason for it stops.

    DHT

The primary reason for hair loss is dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. The hormone attacks the hair follicles on the crown of the head as a result of hormonal changes linked to aging or a history of balding in the family. Testosterone is converted to DHT with the help of the enzyme Type II 5 alpha-reductase. The DHT then shrinks the hair follicles, which causes thinning and balding.

Wearing a Hat Won't Cause Hair Loss

The wearing of hats is not a reason for hair loss or balding. Rather, balding is a reason why people choose to wear hats.
