  • <h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: A Server Is Just a Computer

A desktop computer and a server are not actually all that different. Installing a server operating system on a desktop essentially turns it into a server, as long as it has a network card installed. Multiple network cards make the machine even more capable as a routing system.

On the Other: Dedicated Servers Are Convenient

Rack-mountable server computers are made specifically for the purpose of operating as a server, so they are much easier to manage as such. This is especially relevant in the case of a large organization with many servers. A group of servers can be stored together in one rack, and share a single monitor, mouse, and keyboard.

    Bottom Line

Using a desktop computer as a server is relatively cost-effective and easy for smaller organizations or in a home. Using proper server hardware for a larger organization with numerous servers is a much more efficient choice.
