<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Oven to Freezer Ease
Silicone is a space age synthetic plastic used to make baking pans and sheets, muffin tins, ice cube trays, spatulas and other utensils. It is FDA approved up to 428 degrees, non-stick, non-reactive and able to move from oven to microwave to freezer with ease, according to cookbook author Rebecca Wood. It also comes in pretty colors.
On the Other: Few Studies
Silicone bake ware has not been extensively studied, and some cooks still fear that silicone oil may migrate, bit by bit, into food and skin, according to Care 2 Make A Difference.
Bottom Line
Silicone is an inert material that does not appear to leach into foods, according to Dr. Andrew Weil. But concerned cooks should stick to silicone kitchen tools, such as spatulas and ice cube trays, Weil says.
