  • Propo-n/apap is the generic version of Darvocet (propoxphene napsylate and acetaminopen), a prescription medication used for treatment of mild to moderate acute or chronic pain. It may also be used for treating restless leg syndrome (RLS) and opioid withdrawal.

    Dosing & Administration

Darvocet is available in tablets containing 50mg of propoxyphene napsylate and 325mg of acetaminophen and tablets containing 100mg of propoxyphene napsylate and 650mg of acetaminophen.

    Function

Propoxyphene stimulates opioid receptors in the brain which release neurotransmitters that lessen sensitivity to pain. Acetaminophen also decreases sensitivity to pain and increases effectiveness of propoxyphene.

    Side Effects

Side effects include dizziness, sedation, nausea, vomiting, constipation, gastrointestinal disturbances, skin rashes, lightheadedness, headache, weakness, euphoria, hallucinations, hypotension and decreased respiration.

    Contraindication

Darvocet should not be taken with alcohol, since alcohol increases the effects of propoxyphene; this combination is potentially fatal. Darvocet should not be taken by pregnant mothers since it may lead to development of birth defects, low birth weight and withdrawal symptoms experienced by the newborn.

    Interactions

Grapefruit juice and medications that are strong CYP3A4 inhibitors increase levels of propoxyphene in the blood stream. Other central nervous system depressants may increase intensity of depressant effects of propoxyphene and lead to severe, potentially fatal respiratory depression.

    Dependence

Long-term use of Darvocet may lead to physical dependence and withdrawal symptoms during cessation of use. Withdrawal symptoms include abdominal cramping, diarrhea, muscle aches, insomnia, irritability and muscle aches.
