  • These days it seems everyone and their pet dog have some sort of program or service to help you create your own web page. The technology barrier between the average computer user and a web presence has dropped precipitously in recent years. That's good for everyone. You no longer need to be a "geek" to get your content online.

    Blog Style

This might be the easiest option of all. The word "blog" is a shortened form of "web blog;" a term that took off some time after the turn of the century. At first it was nothing more than barebones thoughts people wrote down and posted every day. Now, you can run a completely automated, sophisticated online business with blogging software. If you're interested in this option, there are two programs that stand out. Blogger.com, is a free service that lets you create an account, then navigate an easy setup process where you design your own layout and start writing content. It takes only a few minutes, and if basic blogging is your goal, this is a great choice. If you plan to create a blog style website but want something a bit more sophisticated, Wordpress is your choice. This mega-popular software is available free online at Wordpress.com. The free version doesn't allow you to sell anything except products you create yourself, which can be a drag if you want to get into affiliate marketing. The way around that is to pay for monthly hosting through a business like Hostgator or GoDaddy. Both companies (and many more) have an easy option to install the Wordpress software in your account with no limitations on how you use it.

    Budding Webmaster

If you have a yearning to exercise full creative control over your website design, and don't mind a steeper learning curve and higher price than with the blogging software, you might be ready for commercial web design programs, including Adobe's Dreamweaver. For several hundred dollars, this is the top of the line in website creation. For beginners, there are several low cost and free alternatives, including Coffee Cup or PageBreeze. Visit the website tucows.com and run a search on "html editor." HTML stands for "Hyper Text Markup Language" and is the behind-the-scenes code that tells a computer how to display a particular web page. With a little research into that term, you could actually create a web page using basic HTML code and nothing more than your Notepad or Wordpad editor already on your computer. Or you might instead visit a site like Weebly.com, where you can design your own web page with their What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG -- pronounced something like "wizzy wig") interface. They even host it for you for free.
