  • <h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Smartlipo Works for Small Areas

Smartlipo works for people who are already in shape. Its purpose is to get rid of that extra five pounds or so that give people a hard time, such as love handles, a bit of fat underneath the chin or flabby arms. The recovery time, scaring and side effects are less with Smartlipo than with regular liposuction.

On the Other: It Doesn't Work for Major Problems

Smartlipo is not for people who are extremely overweight or have a body mass index of more than 25. It also takes about 12 weeks to notice any results. In addition, although Cynosure, Inc. got clearance for their Smartlipo procedure from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2006, it has not been around long enough to know of any long-term effects. According to SimplyAnti-Aging.com, there is a concern that the heat generated from the laser may release free fatty acids into the bloodstream, which could be dangerous.

    Bottom Line

For minor problem areas, Smartlipo is a good choice because it is causes less scaring, requires less recovery time, does not require that the patient be put under anesthesia and is less expensive than traditional liposuction. Although, less expensive does not mean inexpensive--2008 figures show procedure prices ranging from $3,000 to $7,000.
