As its name suggest, the carnation was once used to make coronation garlands. While these floral crowns dominated in ancient Greece and Rome, in modern times headgear used to crown royalty features precious metals and jewels. Lilies are associated with French royalty, but crowns feature inscribed fleur-de-lis rather than fresh flowers.
