Daily wear contacts can be worn longer than the typical 10- to 12-hour wear period. The lenses will still continue to correct vision, even if the directions state to dispose of the contact lenses daily.

    On the Other: Associated Risks

Contact lenses that are worn past the recommended expiration date can lead to eye damage. Infections are more likely as wearing contacts decreases the amount of oxygen that reaches the eye. Because of this, proper cleaning is required to keep the eyes healthy. Misusing daily contact lenses may result in the lenses not being as clean as they should be. Protein build-up on the lens may lead to blurred vision and even corneal scratching.

    Bottom Line

Daily wear contacts should not be worn for more than one day, as there are many risks associated with wearing them past the expiration date. The decision to prolong the life of contact lenses should be carefully discussed with the eye-care provider.
