Household appliances account for just under 20 percent of your family's total energy usage. Whether you are calculating the electric loads for an alternative energy system or just wish to start cutting monthly utility bills, evaluating your appliance use is a good first step.
Clothes Dryer
If you use an electric clothes dryer, brace yourself. This hungry appliance consumes 4,000 watts of power (that's 4 kW) per hour of use. Makes you want to put up a clothesline out back. Even a gas dryer uses 300 to 400 watts per hour just to spin the drum.
Dishwasher
Your dishwasher, in saving you the time it takes to sponge, rinse and dry your dinner dishes, uses between 1,200 and 1,500 watts of power during an hour-long cycle.
Microwave Oven
Your microwave oven may be your most frequently used kitchen appliance. Every hour you run your microwave, it consumes 750 watts of electricity.
Hair Dryer
Your hair dryer, depending on its size, uses 1,000 watts of electricity during an hour's worth of use. Check the label to get the specific wattage for your model.
Coffee Maker
To brew that perfect pot of morning coffee, your automatic drip coffee maker expends 200 watts of electricity.
Computers
Surprise. Your laptop computer uses only 20 to 50 watts of electricity per hour, while your desktop expends 80 to 150 watts.
